You will see "14K gold-plated" on many jewelry listings, including much of what we make at Meli. Here is what it means, what to expect, and how to keep a plated piece looking its best.
What gold plate means
Gold plate is a thin layer of gold applied over a base metal. "14K" describes the purity of the gold used in that layer. The piece looks like gold, but the gold sits on the surface rather than running all the way through.
Gold plate vs solid gold
Solid gold is gold throughout, which makes it more expensive and generally more durable against wear. Plated jewelry costs less and lets designers work in bolder, more detailed shapes. The trade-off is that the plating can wear down over time, especially on pieces that rub against skin, clothing and other jewelry every day.
Making plated jewelry last
- Put jewelry on last, after perfume, lotion and hairspray.
- Take it off before swimming, showering and working out.
- Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth after wearing.
- Store each piece separately in a pouch or lined box.

Which pieces at Meli are gold-plated?
Many Meli pieces are made in 14K gold plate, including the Omnia Bracelet, the Omnia Medallion and the Totem Ring. Others, like the Omnia Ring, are silver. The metal is listed on each product page.
Is it right for you?
If you like to change your jewelry often, want a bigger or more sculptural design, or prefer a more approachable price, gold plate is a good fit. If you want one piece to wear in the shower and the gym every day for decades, solid gold is the better choice.
