The Story Behind Meli: Heritage, Craft and Play

Omnia Medallion, an oval 14K gold-plated pendant on a chain with the letter A and a heart set with moissanite

Meli is jewelry inspired by heritage, the art of play, and joie de vivre. It is the work of Onanma Okeke, who grew up between places, from Nigeria to Brazil to New York, and who named the brand after her sister.

A collector's eye

Onanma was influenced by two generations of collectors. Meli is her tribute to life embodied by culture and the stories of generations past. She studied fashion at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where she developed a deep appreciation for the precision and patience behind exceptional craftsmanship, and her background in art history shaped how she looks at archives, exhibitions and materials.

Where the ideas come from

Travel is her biggest source of inspiration. Markets, museums, historic garments, family heirlooms and everyday wardrobes all remind her that the most meaningful objects are the ones that carry history. Growing up in Nigeria and later living across South America, Asia and North America, she saw how each place has its own relationship with craftsmanship and beauty.

Made with skilled artisans

Meli collaborates with skilled artisans in Jaipur and Nigeria, whose generations of knowledge continue to inspire the work. Together they celebrate craftsmanship, preserve traditional techniques, and create pieces that honor both heritage and contemporary life.

Jewelry meant to be passed on

Pieces like the Omnia Medallion and the Anya Locket are made to be worn, stacked and kept. The idea is simple: fashion is at its best when it carries meaning, respects the hands that made it, and tells a story worth passing on.
